Concordia Youth Soccer

Dear Parents & Youth Players,
I am writing this letter to welcome you to our club and to highlight our philosophy and the benefits offered to your player at SCD Concordia. If it sounds like I'm bragging it’s because I am very proud of what we stand for. Our soccer club is a non-profit organization that was created in 1963 solely for the enjoyment of our children. I want to stress right up front we are not a business and player fees go directly to pay coaches and for the up keep of the fields. Our youth soccer program at Concordia has been and will always be about player development.

Youth players develop at different stages of their soccer career and should keep learning the game for their entire lives. Skills are developed through their youth careers and by the time they get through high school their skills and conditioning should peek going into college. Development of player skill, attitude, training habits, and knowledge of game tactics at age levels playing 6 v 6 and 8 v 8 are keys to future player and club success.

The youth staff I have assembled is made up of some of the finest coaches in the state of Ohio. Many of these coaches have played, managed and taught at the highest levels of soccer. These coaches believe and incorporate our clubs philosophy in training and in game play. They fully believe and understand that winning is not as important as player development at the early stages of a youth career. At the older ages we focus on the tactics, attitude and skills to be a complete winning footballer. Our focus for the older age groups is to prepare our players for the demands of high school and college soccer by providing training by high school coaches and diverse playing options.
We believe in providing opportunities for players to play games in their own age group along with the chance to “play up” in age. The only limit we place on their play is their skill level. We teach that through hard work and improvement players are rewarded. As our boys skills progress and they become young men (U17 age) we provide additional playing opportunities on our club teams who play in northeaster Ohio’s premier men’s league, the Lake Erie Soccer League. The opportunity to play and learn from current and former NCAA, Professional, and U.S National Team players is something very few clubs can offer.

We are repeatedly asked when we have open tryouts. Our answer is rarely. Our younger teams rarely have tryouts for a reason. We feel loyalty to those who come and want to learn. As teams and players develop, winning comes. As time goes on and players feel “this is not the sport for me” or players choose not to work on their skill, players depart and others take their place. Instead of the high pressure, non-training, 2 hour tryout environment, we prefer to have players come in and work out with our teams a few times. Usually after the 2nd or 3rd work out, the nerves are gone and they have settled in, this is when we see the “true” player’s skills and developmental areas. This method also lets the players decide if our training style is a fit for them.

In closing, I can not stress the point enough, that winning is not as important as the development of your sons and daughters as players. If you have a son or daughter between the ages of 8 and 11 and you are looking at just wins and losses this is not the club for you. I would also venture to say you will never be happy anywhere. We do not cater to club jumpers. BUT, if you want your child to develop skills and long time friends, have a family oriented place for players and parents, a place to enjoy soccer and other types of functions, you have come to the right place.

Anytime you see me and have any questions about the club or our philosophy feel free to ask.

Thank you,

Rick Welker
